Integrated Telehealth Partners (ITP)
Amber Wright, a therapist with Integrated Telehealth Partners, talked about mental health resources and stress management tips for farmers with Cami Koon, a reporter for the Iowa Capital Dispatch. Wright said communication, on the part of the person struggling and from their support network, are important factors in addressing some of the issues.
Wright, who meets with patients via telehealth at UnityPoint Health’s Behavioral Health Clinic in Grinnell, said irritability, increased substance or alcohol consumption, and sleeplessness are signs that someone might be having more than just a bad day.
“That could be another symptom of something else major,” Wright said.
Rural farming communities often lack adequate access to mental health care, making it harder for farmers to get help when they need it. To reduce stress and prevent more serious mental health challenges, Wright emphasizes focusing on basic daily needs such as proper nutrition, hydration, and sleep. She also encourages farmers to intentionally make time for simple activities or hobbies like walking, driving, or meeting a friend, which can lower stress and improve morale.
Telehealth counseling and online resources provide important mental health support options for rural farm families. Organizations such as Iowa State University, the Iowa Farm Bureau, and the Iowa Corn Growers Association offer curated mental health resources, while groups like Farm Rescue provide hands-on operational assistance during times of crisis. Iowa State University also supports farmers through the Iowa Concern hotline, free counseling partnerships, and practical stress-management tools such as financial, legal, and disaster planning resources. According to Wright, using these supports including organizing expenses and financial planning, can help reduce stress and improve preparedness for future challenges.
